Tillman Memo Contracted Citation

Go to Original Tillman Memo Contradicted Citation
By Scott Lindlaw and Martha Mendoza
The Associated Press Friday 03 August 2007 San
Francisco - Just a day after approving a medal claiming former NFL
player Pat Tillman had been cut down by "devastating enemy fire" in
Afghanistan, a high-ranking general tried to warn President Bush that
the story might not be true, according to testimony obtained by The
Associated Press. Despite this apparent contradiction, Lt. Gen.
Stanley McChrystal was spared punishment in the latest review of
Tillman's shooting. On Tuesday, the Army overruled a Pentagon
recommendation that he be held accountable for his "misleading"
actions. In a sometimes contentious November interview under
oath and via videoconference, Pentagon investigators sharply
questioned McChrystal about the conflicting accounts, according to
the testimony obtained by the AP under the Freedom of Information
Act. McChrystal acknowledged he had suspected several days
prior to approving the Silver Star citation on April 28, 2004,
that Tillman may have died by fratricide. He said that
suspicion led him to send a memo to top generals imploring "our
nation's leaders," specifically "POTUS" - the acronym for the
president - to avoid cribbing the "devastating enemy fire"
explanation from the award citation for their speeches. "Why
did you recommend the Silver Star one day and then the next day send
a secret back-channel message warning the country's leaders about
using information from the Silver Star in public speeches because
they might be embarrassed if they do?" an investigator asked
McChrystal. Despite numerous questions, the general never
directly explained the discrepancies. "That question seems to
imply the fact that we were giving the award with one hand and then
with the other hand saying it was something different," he
protested. "But that's exactly the opposite of the way I felt and
feel now." McChrystal told the investigators that he believed
Tillman deserved
the award, and that he wanted to warn top U.S. military and
political leadership that friendly fire was a
possibility. "Because I thought it was friendly fire I thought
it was important that key attendees know that that theory could
become the finding of the investigation, and if they were going to
make a statement about 'killed by enemy fire,' it might not be
certain," McChrystal said. The "secret back-channel message"
was a memo known as a P4 that McChrystal wrote on April 29, 2004, to
Gen. John Abizaid, head of Central Command, and to two other
generals. The P4 noted rumors that Bush and other top
officials "might include comments about Cpl. Tillman's heroism and
his approved Silver Star medal in speeches." He warned that it "might
cause public embarrassment" if the circumstances of Tillman's death
were released. In the Silver Star citation, McChrystal had
praised Tillman for placing himself "in the line of devastating enemy
fire."
Tillman's comrades who were nearby in the moments before he was
killed have testified that fellow Americans were shooting at them. A
few also have testified that the enemy may have been firing as well,
but ineffectively. No enemy bullet, rocket or mortar appeared to come
close to Tillman during his last minutes on a barren hillside in
eastern Afghanistan. McChrystal was then and remains commander
of the covert Joint Special Operations Command, the military's
clandestine "black ops" corps, which fights in the shadows of battles
in Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond. Among those who work with him,
McChrystal is respected and admired for his leadership and integrity.
He also has the trust of Bush, who - despite the secrecy of
McChrystal's operation - publicly praised him last year when al-Qaida
in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S.
airstrike. Attempts to reach McChrystal this week by telephone
and e-mail were unsuccessful. Ken McGraw, a
spokesman for US Special Operations Command, said in an e-mail
Friday that it would be "inappropriate" for McChrystal to comment or
speculate about the punishment decisions. McChrystal also
declined an invitation to appear Wednesday before a congressional
committee investigating the misinformation given to Tillman's family
and the American public following his friendly fire death in
Afghanistan. Tillman's parents have been critical of the
military's punishments surrounding their son's death. The Army waited
about five weeks after it suspected friendly fire was involved before
telling Tillman's family the true nature of his death.
McChrystal testified in a previous investigation that he had decided
not to tell the Tillman family of friendly fire "based on my thought
that providing incorrect information before an initial investigation
was complete was not in line with normal policies." However, Army
regulations require that families be notified when such an
investigation is under way - not when it is completed. Like
several other officers involved in the case, McChrystal testified
that he did not know about the rule. After a year-long inquiry
that ended in March, the Pentagon's acting inspector general found
that McChrystal should be held "accountable for the inaccurate and
misleading assertions" in the Silver Star award recommendation; and
for failing to notify the officials processing the award that
friendly fire was likely. "The P4 message did not request or
suggest any action to correct the information in the award
recommendation package," wrote Thomas Gimble, then the Pentagon's top
investigator. Gimble recommended that the acting Army
secretary "address and take action" against McChrystal and one
subordinate for failing "to submit an accurate Silver Star
recommendation." McChrystal was the highest-ranking of nine officers
Gimble recommended be "held accountable" for their involvement in the
aftermath of Tillman's death. But the Army cast that aside
Tuesday when it overruled the Pentagon's recommendation.
Another Army general, William Wallace, concluded McChrystal had
behaved reasonably in assuming the supporting material presented to
him for Tillman's Silver Star recommendation was accurate. The Army's
statement Tuesday made no mention of McChrystal's acknowledgment
under oath that he had known prior to approving the Silver Star that
fratricide was a strong possibility. Asked by a reporter at a
news conference Tuesday why McChrystal did not simply call Tillman's
family, Army Secretary Pete Geren said that was the job of another
chain of command run by Lt. Gen. Philip R. Kensinger Jr., who then
led Army special operations forces. Kensinger, who has since
retired, was censured by the Army for allegedly lying to
investigators and for "a failure of leadership." -------

THE FATHER OF SPIN: Bernays

THE FATHER OF SPIN
Bernays dominated the PR industry until the 1940s, and was a significant force for another 40 years after that. (Tye) During all that time, Bernays took on hundreds of diverse assignments to create a public perception about some idea or product. A few examples: As a neophyte with the Committee on Public Information, one of Bernays' first assignments was to help sell the First World War to the American public with the idea to “Make the World Safe for Democracy.” (Ewen) A few years later, Bernays set up a stunt to popularize the notion of women smoking cigarettes. In organizing the 1929 Easter Parade in New York City, Bernays showed himself as a force to be reckoned with. He organized the Torches of Liberty Brigade in which suffragettes marched in the parade smoking cigarettes as a mark of women's liberation. Such publicity followed from that one event that from then on women have felt secure about destroying their own lungs in public, the same way that men have always done. Bernays popularized the idea of bacon for breakfast. Not one to turn down a challenge, he set up the advertising format along with the AMA that lasted for nearly 50 years proving that cigarettes are beneficial to health. Just look at ads in issues of Life or Time from the 40s and 50s. During the next several decades Bernays and his colleagues evolved the principles by which masses of people could be generally swayed through messages repeated over and over hundreds of times. Once the value of media became apparent, other countries of the world tried to follow our lead. But Bernays really was the gold standard. Josef Goebbels, who was Hitler's minister of propaganda, studied the principles of Edward Bernays when Goebbels was developing the popular rationale he would use to convince the Germans that they had to purify their race. (Stauber)
SMOKE AND MIRRORSBernay's job was to reframe an issue; to create a desired image that would put a particular product or concept in a desirable light. Bernays described the public as a ‘herd that needed to be led.’ And this herdlike thinking makes people “susceptible to leadership.” Bernays never deviated from his fundamental axiom to “control the masses without their knowing it.” The best PR happens with the people unaware that they are being manipulated. Stauber describes Bernays' rationale like this: “the scientific manipulation of public opinion was necessary to overcome chaos and conflict in a democratic society.” Trust Us p 42 These early mass persuaders postured themselves as performing a moral service for humanity in general - democracy was too good for people; they needed to be told what to think, because they were incapable of rational thought by themselves. Here's a paragraph from Bernays' Propaganda: “Those who manipulate the unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. In almost every act of our lives whether in the sphere of politics or business in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires that control the public mind.” A tad different from Thomas Jefferson's view on the subject: “I know of no safe depository of the ultimate power of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise that control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not take it from them, but to inform their discretion.” Inform their discretion. Bernays believed that only a few possessed the necessary insight into the Big Picture to be entrusted with this sacred task. And luckily, he saw himself as one of that few.

8/2/07: Bush Hiding Secrets of "Dictator Act" from HomeSecCom

BREAKING / LONE STAR ICONOCLAST / 8/2/07

Bush Hiding Secrets of "Dictator Act" from HomeSecCom Chairman

By Captain Eric H. May
Military Correspondent

Crawford, Texas -- In a move certain to generate more alarm, the
Bush Administration's Frances Townsend yesterday denied House
Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bernie Thompson's July 27
written request for access to National Security Presidential
Directive 51 (NSPD-51), the so-called "Dictator Act," which allows
Bush to control federal, state and local governments -- as well as
key private industries -- in case of a catastrophic event.

Critics point out that NSPD-51, which Bush signed May 9, allows him
to determine what does and doesn't constitute a catastrophe, and
opens the door to dictatorship.

This weekend I will write and publish a comprehensive update to
this developing story via Internet publications, and it will run in
the Iconoclast's next issue Tuesday. For more details, see my last

U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

The Honorable Christopher P. Carney
Chairman
Subcommittee on Management, Investigations, and Oversight
Committee on Homeland Security
U.S. House of Representatives

The Honorable Peter A. DeFazio
Committee on Homeland Security
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20525

Dear Chairman Thompson, Chairman Carney, and Representative DeFazio:

I am writing to respond to your letter of July 27, 2007, concerning
the classified annexes to National Security Presidential Directive-
51/Homeland Security Presidential Directive-20 (NSPD-51/HSPD-20) of
May 4 2007 ("National Continuity Policy").

One of the overriding goals of NSPD-51/HSPD-20 was to describe, for
the first time in an unclassified manner, actions that the executive
branch is taking to ensure the effectiveness of our national
continuity capability. As the National Continuity Coordinator, I
understand the important work done by those at all levels of
government to ensure the preservation of our form of government under
the Constitution and the continuing performance of National Essential
Functions under all conditions. NSPD-51/HSPD-20 represents the most
information ever publicly provided by the executive on continuity
issues.

As you know, NSPD-51/HSPD-20 directs that an implementation plan be
submitted to the President for approval this month. The
implementation plan will provide further direction to executive
branch departments and agencies to promote coordination of continuity
programs with our partners at the Federal, State, and local levels
and in the private sector.

Regarding the highly sensitive classified annexes to NSPD-51/HSPD-
20 that you requested, we are unable to share them with the
membership and staff of the Committee. It has long been the policy of
the executive branch -- predating the current Administration -- to
treat specific continuity operational details as extremely sensitive.
Traditionally, the executive branch has briefed the most senior
congressional leadership on sensitive continuity information. For the
House of Representative, we remain in regular contact with the
Offices of the Speaker, the Majority Leader, and the Republican
Leader on specific continuity plans. We are committed to continuing
to work with congressional leadership on these issues and are
sensitive to respecting their prerogatives in coordinating continuity
issues between the legislative and executive branches.

Sincerely,

Frances F. Townsend
Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and
Counterterrorism

RETURN OF SHEIKS ON A PLANE!
DCIA Air Charters Flew Saudi Flights

WORLD EXCLUSIVE
June 25 2007
by Daniel Hopsicker

Flatly contradicting the repeated assertions by the White
House and FBI that the Bush administration played no role in the
flights, an exclusive MadCowMorningNews investigation has uncovered
numerous connections between the White House and the air charter
companies involved in the evacuation of the members of the Saudi
Royal family after the 9/11 attack.

Two of the six Saudi charter flights scrutinized by the
9/11 Commission were flown by air contractors involved in CIA
renditions, while a third had close ties to imprisoned Republican
lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The charter flight called "The Universal Weather Flight"
by the FBI has led to the discovery that all three of the top
corporate air charter companies in Houston, Texas are CIA contractors
deeply involved in "extraordinary renditions."

And the air charter company flight used by Saudi royals
anxious to flee Las Vegas, on a 727 sporting, ironically enough, the
Christian symbol of peace, a dove, on it's tail, and which belonged
to a Christian broadcaster, PAX-TV.

A close reading of the newly-released government records
clearly illustrated the active role played by the Federal Bureau of
Investigation in aiding some of the Saudis in their departure.

Of course, the FBI strenuously disagrees.

"I say baloney to any inference we red-carpeted any of
this entourage," an FBI official wrote in a 2003 internal note which
was released.

"Red-carpeting the entourage" appears to be the least of
it.

White House Seeks Warrantless Authority From Congress 01 Aug 2007]

Breaking News and Commentary from Citizens For Legitimate Government
01 Aug 2007
All links and summaries to articles below are available here:

White House Seeks Warrantless Authority From Congress 01 Aug 2007 The Bush regime is pressing Congress this week for the authority to intercept, without a court order, any international phone call or e-mail between a surveillance target outside the United States and any person in the United States. The proposal, submitted by Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell to congressional leaders on Friday, would amend [void] the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) for the first time since 2006 so that a court order would no longer be needed before wiretapping anyone "reasonably believed to be located outside of the United States."

Democrats Scrambling to Expand Eavesdropping 01 Aug 2007 Under pressure from President [sic] Bush, Democratic leaders in Congress are scrambling to pass legislation this week to expand the government's electronic wiretapping powers. Democratic leaders have expressed a new willingness to work with the White House to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to make it easier for the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on some purely foreign telephone calls and e-mail. Such a step now requires court approval. [Start reading.]

NSA Spying Part of Broader Effort --Intelligence Chief Says Bush Authorized Secret Activities Under One Order 01 Aug 2007 The Bush administration's chief intelligence official said yesterday that President [sic] Bush authorized a series of secret surveillance activities under a single executive order in late 2001. The disclosure makes clear that a controversial National Security Agency program was part of a much broader operation than the president previously described. The disclosure by Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, appears to be the first time that the regime has publicly acknowledged that Bush's order included undisclosed activities beyond the warrantless [illegal] surveillance of e-mails and phone calls that Bush confirmed in December 2005.

Bill calls for Gonzales impeachment inquiry 01 Aug 2007 Democratic House members, including several former prosecutors, introduced a measure Tuesday directing the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether to impeach Atty. Gen. Alberto R. Gonzales. Rep. Dennis Moore (D-Kan.), a co-sponsor of the measure, said the investigation was warranted given the questions about whether Gonzales misled Congress in testimony about the firing of eight U.S. attorneys and about a secret government eavesdropping program.

Cheney on Trip to Ashcroft's Hospital Bedside: "I Don't Recall" [Try a Bush-approved CIA tactic, such as waterboarding.] By Paul Kiel 31 Jul 2007 From Dick Cheney's interview with Larry King: Q In that regard, The New York Times... reports it was you who dispatched Gonzales and Andy Card to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft's hospital in 2004 to push Ashcroft to certify the President's [sic] intelligence-gathering program. Was it you? THE VICE PRESIDENT [sic]: I don't recall... And I don't recall that I gave instructions to that effect. Q That would be something you would recall. CHENEY: I would think so. But... By the time this occurred, it had already been approved about 12 times by the Department of Justice. There was nothing new about it. Q So you didn't send them to get permission. CHENEY: I don't recall that I was the one who sent them to the hospital.

Cheney says Libby should not have been convicted 31 Jul 2007 Vice President [sic] Dick Cheney thinks his former chief of staff shouldn't have been convicted in the CIA leak case and that President [sic] Bush did right by commuting the jail sentence instead of issuing a pardon. "I thought the president handled it right," Cheney said in an interview Monday with Mark Knoller of CBS Radio. "I supported his decision."

Kurdish leader warns of Iraqi civil war 31 Jul 2007 The leader of Iraq's Kurdish region warned Tuesday of a "real civil war" if the central government does not implement a constitutional clause on the future of Kirkuk, the oil-rich city claimed by the Kurds [US].

Britain will take troops out of Iraq regardless of US, says PM 31 Jul 2007 Gordon Brown has paved the way for the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq by telling George Bush he would not delay their exit in order to show unity with the United States... Deliberately avoiding the phrase "war on terror," Mr Brown said: "Terrorism is not a cause but a crime - a crime against humanity." In contrast, the President spoke of "this war against extremists and radicals".

British do not foresee Iraq withdrawal: Petraeus 30 Jul 2007 General David Petraeus, commander of US forces in Iraq, said Monday he did not believe Britain was preparing to pull its troops out of Iraq.

US to rotate 20,000 troops into Iraq in December 31 Jul 2007 Nearly 20,000 U.S. troops based in the United States will begin departing for Iraq in December as part of the regular rotation of combat forces there, the Defense Department announced Tuesday... Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman would not say what units would be replaced.

3 U.S. Soldiers Dead in Baghdad 01 Aug 2007 Three U.S. soldiers were killed and six wounded by a sophisticated armor-piercing bomb in eastern Baghdad, the U.S. military said Wednesday. An explosively-formed penetrator, or EFP, detonated near the soldiers' patrol during combat operations on Tuesday, the military said in a statement.

After the $63 billion dollar Bush blowjob: Arab Allies Caution Against Quick U.S. Exit From Iraq 31 Jul 2007 Major Arab allies of the U.S. cautioned today against a rapid troop withdrawal from Iraq that could shake the region, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in Egypt.

US signs huge arms deals with Arab allies 31 Jul 2007 The United States last night confirmed it had agreed arms deals with Arab allies worth billions of dollars in an attempt to counter "negative influences" such as Iran, Syria, and 'al-Qa'eda' in the Middle East. Ahead of a trip by Condoleezza Rice, the Secretary of State, and Robert Gates, the Defence Secretary, to the Middle East, the Bush administration said it had agreed a 10-year, $13 billion (£6.4 billion) deal with Egypt and a $20 billion deal for Saudi Arabia. The announcement came a day after a $30 billion military aid pact over 10 years was announced with Israel.

Merkel party warns US arms for Gulf could set off 'powder keg' 31 Jul 2007 German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats are worried that reported US plans to send a major arms package to Gulf states could inflame a volatile region, a party leader was quoted as saying Monday. The chairman of the German parliament's foreign affairs committee, Ruprecht Polenz, told the daily Frankfurter Rundschau that the Middle East was already a "powder keg" and that an influx of weapons could set off. "If you add more explosives to a powder keg, you increase the risk and do not make the region more secure," he said.

U.S. presidential candidate slams arms sales to Saudis 01 Aug 2007 Presidential hopeful John Edwards said the Bush administration's plan to sell $20 billion worth of weapons to friendly Arab states amounted to a foreign policy of convenience and he will take a tougher stance with Saudi Arabia if elected president.

'You can see the whole arms package as a buyoff of Arab nations for what we've done in Iraq.' The $63 billion sham By Derrick Jackson 01 Aug 2007 Talk about wriggling in quicksand. Having destroyed Iraq to save us from horrors that did not exist, [Condoleezza] Rice now wants to save us from Iran's future nukes by selling American weapons of mass destruction. Over the next decade, the Bush administration wants to give Israel $30 billion in military aid, a nearly 43 percent increase over what that nation received over the last 10 years, according to The New York Times. We want to give $20 billion to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. We want to give Egypt $13 billion. Do you feel safe?

Appeal court quashes media gag over White House meeting --Whitehall officer said to have described contents as "abhorrent" and "illegal", and that he believed the memo exposed Mr Bush as a "madman". 31 Jul 2007 An attempt to prevent the press from repeating British concerns about US military tactics in Iraq, including the killing of civilians in Falluja and President [sic] Bush's alleged suggestion that the offices of the Arabic satellite TV station al-Jazeera should be bombed, was quashed by the appeal court yesterday. The issue arose during the trial of David Keogh, a Whitehall communications officer, and Leo O'Connor, a former researcher to a Labour MP, jailed under the Official Secrets Act in May for disclosing the contents of minutes of a White House meeting between George Bush and Tony Blair on April 16 2004.

Rumsfeld to testify [testilie] at Tillman fratricide hearing --Former JCS chief Myers, CentCom leader Abizaid also among those appearing 31 Jul 2007 Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will testify before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday morning about what Defense Department leaders knew about the friendly fire death of Cpl. Pat Tillman, the committee confirmed late Tuesday. The hearing, "The Tillman Fratricide: What the Leadership of the Defense Department Knew," will begin at 10 a.m. in Room 2154 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Retired General Censured in Tillman Case --Retired 3-Star Gen. Kensinger Censured in Cover-Up After Death of Tillman 31 Jul 2007 The Army censured a retired three-star general Tuesday for a "perfect storm of mistakes, misjudgments and a failure of leadership" after the 2004 friendly-fire death in Afghanistan of Army Ranger Pat Tillman. Army Secretary Pete Geren asked a military review panel to decide whether Lt. Gen. Philip Kensinger, who led Army special operation forces after the Sept. 11 attacks, should also have his rank reduced.

Imran Khan: President Musharraf must resign 31 Jul 2007 Imran Khan, the former Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician, called on President Pervez Musharraf to resign yesterday. "It is all over for him. He is sunk," Mr Khan told The Daily Telegraph. "He has lost touch with Pakistan. It is a crisis of his own making and the accumulative effect of his miscalculations."

Lieberman escalates attack on Iraq critics 31 Jul 2007 Ever since Connecticut Democrats refused to back him for a fourth term in Congress, Joe LieberBush has been burnishing his independent credentials in the narrowly divided Senate while becoming increasingly critical of the Democratic Party on the war in Iraq. LieberBush insists he is not actively considering joining the Republican Party. But he is keeping that possibility wide open as his disenchantment grows with Democratic leaders.

Child Maltreatment Rises in Homes of Soldiers Sent to War 31 Jul 2007 A U.S. Army-sponsored study finds that children of enlisted soldiers are more likely to be abused or neglected when a parent is deployed to a combat zone. The findings point to the need for more support services at home, the study authors said. The study [by the Children and Families Program at RTI International in Research Triangle Park, N.C.] is published in the Aug. 1 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, a theme issue on violence and human rights.

Rorschach and Awe --America's coercive interrogation methods were reverse-engineered by two C.I.A. psychologists who had spent their careers training U.S. soldiers to endure Communist-style torture techniques. The spread of these tactics was fueled by a myth about a critical "black site" operation. by Katherine Eban 17 Jul 2007 ...[T]he C.I.A. team began building a coffin in which they planned to bury the detainee alive. A furor erupted over the legality of this move, which does not appear to have been carried out. (Every human-rights treaty and American law governing the treatment of prisoners prohibits death threats and simulated killings.) But the C.I.A. had a ready rejoinder: the methods had already been approved by White House lawyers.

Sydney Installs Terror Loudspeakers 01 Aug 2007 Australia's largest city has installed dozens of loudspeakers to tell residents what to do in a terrorist attack, an official said Wednesday.

Indefinite sentences 'unlawful', court rules 01 Aug 2007 The policy of locking up some prisoners until it is considered safe to free them is in crisis after it was condemned as "arbitrary, unreasonable and unlawful" by the High Court.

'Someone there must be out of their skull.' Livingstone fights 'stupid' Heathrow protesters ban 01 Aug 2007 Heathrow's owner, BAA, came under sustained attack from the Mayor of London [Ken Livingstone] and business leaders over poor facilities at the airport and plans to halt environmental protesters.

Chief justice leaves hospital after scare --Roberts earlier told Bush that he's 'fine' after seizure 31 Jul 2007 Chief Justice John Roberts was released from a hospital in Maine Tuesday, a day after suffering a seizure. Roberts, 52, plans to continue his vacation at a summer home in Maine, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.

Roberts Tells Bush He's OK After Seizure 31 Jul 2007 Chief Justice John Roberts told President [sic] Bush Tuesday he was doing well after sustaining a seizure at his Maine vacation home, the White House said. Bush called Roberts Tuesday morning. "The chief justice assured him that he was doing fine," White House press secretary Tony Snow said. "The president was reassured."

Voting Officials Face New Rules to Bar Conflicts 01 Aug 2007 The state officials who run the nation's elections — most with little oversight — are facing new efforts to limit what have been widely criticized as political and financial conflicts of interest... In the last presidential 'election,' the secretaries of state in Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, were chairmen of their states' re-[s]election campaigns for President [sic] Bush.

'If this change is made, it will virtually guarantee that a Republican wins the White House in 2008.' California electoral-vote plan could sway 2008 presidential race 30 Jul 2007 A prominent Republican lawyer wants to put a proposal on the California ballot next year that could shake up the 2008 presidential contest, a change Democrats say would rig the election. California awards its cache of 55 electoral votes to the statewide winner in presidential elections — the largest single prize in the nation. But under the proposal, the statewide winner would get only two electoral votes... The change — if it qualifies and is approved by 'voters' — would mean that a Republican would be positioned the following November to snatch 20 or more electoral votes in GOP-leaning districts.

Votescam By Hendrik Hertzberg August 6, 2007 At first glance, next year's Presidential election looks like a blowout. But it might not be... Two weeks ago, one of the most important Republican lawyers in Sacramento quietly filed a ballot initiative that would end the practice of granting all fifty-five of California's electoral votes to the statewide winner. Instead, it would award two of them to the statewide winner and the rest, one by one, to the winner in each congressional district... The bottom line is that the initiative, if passed, would spot the Republican ticket something in the neighborhood of twenty electoral votes—votes that it wouldn't get under the rules prevailing in every other sizable state in the Union.

FBI Probes Stevens's Earmark --$1.6 Million Appropriation Went to Alaska Marine Life Center 01 Aug 2007 The FBI is investigating whether Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) used a $1.6 million congressional appropriation to help an Alaska marine center purchase property from a business partner of the senator's son, said sources familiar with the probe. That investigation comes amid a widening federal grand-jury probe into Stevens's connections to an energy services company [Veco Corp.].

Oil Settles Above $78, Setting Record 31 Jul 2007 Oil futures settled at a record high above $78 Tuesday on 'expectations that crude inventories fell last week' and 'reports of new violence in Nigeria, a large oil producer and key supplier to the U.S.' [For the *actual* reasons behind the record high oil prices, see: Exxon Mobil makes $10B on record gas prices 26 Jul 2007 and Shell 2Q Net Profit Rises 18 Percent to $8.67 Billion 26 Jul 2007.]

U.S. nuclear plants may be eligible for billions in loan guarantees 31 Jul 2007 A one-sentence provision buried in an energy bill recently passed by the U.S. Senate could make builders of new nuclear plants in America eligible for tens of billions of dollars in government loan guarantees. Lobbyists recently told lawmakers and officials in the Bush regime that the nuclear industry needs as much as $50 billion in loan guarantees over the next two years to finance a major expansion. The provision, inserted without debate at the urging of the nuclear power industry, has the potential to dramatically expand the U.S. nuclear industry, which plans to build 19 new power plants at an estimated cost of about $4 billion to $5 billion apiece.

[Previous lead stories:] Security hearings called "Kafkaesque" 30 Jul 2007 Terrorism suspects held under virtual house arrest in Britain suffer "Kafkaesque" treatment in special courts that review secret evidence against them, a committee of legislators said on Monday. The committee's report said "no right-minded person" would think the suspects had a fair hearing when they often had no idea of the case against them. It likened the system to the Star Chamber, a secretive and oppressive English court abolished in 1641. The law allows suspects who cannot be prosecuted in the courts to be held under a loose form of house arrest known as a "control order".

No proof Britain needs tougher terrorism laws, Parliament report says 30 Jul 2007 The British government has failed to prove the need to toughen anti-terrorism laws to let the police detain suspects longer before they must charge or release them, a group of lawmakers said in a report Monday. The committee's report said the government had yet to demonstrate that the police need more time to question terror suspects, who must now be charged or released within 28 days.

Pentagon to implant microchips in soldiers’ brains

By Adam Thomas

The Department of Defense is planning to implant microchips in soldiers’ brains for monitoring their health information, and has already awarded a $1.6 million contract to the Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips (C3B) at Clemson University for the development of an implantable “biochip”.

Soldiers fear that the biochip, about the size of a grain of rice, which measures and relays information on soldiers vital signs 24 hours a day, can be used to put them under surveillance even when they are off duty.

But Anthony Guiseppi-Elie, C3B director and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Bioengineering claims the that the invivo biosensors will save lives as first responders to the trauma scene could inject the biochip into the wounded victim and gather data almost immediately.

He believes that the device has other long-term potential applications, such as monitoring astronauts’ vital signs during long-duration space flights and reading blood-sugar levels for diabetics.

“We now lose a large percentage of patients to bleeding, and getting vital information such as how much oxygen is in the tissue back to ER physicians and medical personnel can often mean the difference between life and death,” said Guiseppi-Elie. “Our goal is to improve the quality and expediency of care for fallen soldiers and civilian trauma victims.” The biochip also may be injected as a precaution to future traumas.”

Clemson scientists have formulated a gel that mimics human tissue and reduces the chances of the body rejecting the biochip, which has been a problem in the past.

The researcher predicts the biochip is five years away from human trials, and the DoD could start implanting microchips in soldiers bodies soon after.

The ontology of the epistemological paradigmatic apotheosis, by Alfons

Much Faith is not reasoned, it is just faith, belief without evidence. I am an agnostic gnostic pantheistic deist, and many other things as well, but I have reached this juncture with a great deal of research, and objective reasoning, and trial and error. Wedges, points of view, opinion, infighting over ideological concepts, Hegelian dialectics, indoctrination, brain washing, propaganda, mind control, and sheer stoopidity, is an obstacle course we need to master. I have faith that we shall overcome by means of the truth.

The ontology of the epistemological paradigmatic apotheosis is a concept that baffles most minds and this is the card the demon worshiping illuminated ones play on their own minds, and the minds of we the people as well. It makes them very dangerous; they are nefarious, insidious, and ubiquitously ever present. Shrewd, cunning, and sociopathological, disgustingly evil, a most formidable enemy, coupled with the concepts of Strauss and likely Nietzsche, Machiavelli, and Dracon, they are the Darthest and dankest of the Darth Vaders, these barbarians are inside our gates.

TSUN TZU"S STRATEGY "know your enemy and know yourself" and "attack your enemy in force at his weakest". The people of the US don’t know their selves or their enemy, many don’t even know who their enemy is, let alone their weaknesses. Our battlefield is much more complex than anything Tsun Tzu ever encountered, because it is to a large degree a psychological battle. What else can be said? How can I impart wisdoms collected over a life time in a few hundred words, or even in a few thousand?

By the Power of Truth we shall wage Peace,

Things You Must Believe to be a Voter/OMG, my sentiments exactly

by Retta Fontana
Exclusive to STR
July 30, 2007
I know what you are thinking, dear reader. Where are parts II
through XXX of the delusions under which the masses operate? This is
not an exhaustive list, just an exasperating one. I'd love to hear
your responses. You might need another cup of coffee for this list,
but it will only hurt for a little while. That's it - now sit back
and keep breathing.
Delusion #13
There is someone, somewhere, who is more interested and capable of
securing your liberty, financial stability and well being than you
are. They are superior beings, who only need to be elected to deliver
to your door all the things you didn't realize that you need and want
but cannot afford. These "freebies" will not only actually arrive one
day, but will be exactly as anticipated and come at little or no cost
to you because of the sheer quantity of people who need them. When
they come, they will be superior to and just as satisfying as if you
had worked to attain them yourself. Whenever you want something, just
sit back, open another beer, turn on the tube and someone else will
surely make it materialize. Keep checking the mail.
Delusion #12
There is someone, somewhere who can be trusted, not only to deliver
your dreams, but who doesn't actually have any ambitions of his or
her own. Bureaucrats are actually a special kind of philanthropist –
they just use other people's money. You must believe that it is not
easy to spend other people's money; it is a stressful, practically
thankless job. They live to fulfill your dreams, serve, protect and
care for you.
These talking heads of government can be trusted to hold your money
for you and return it one day, plus interest. (If they mess this one
up, don't worry, you'll probably win the lottery.) You must believe
that they can be trusted to decide how much of your money they should
use to pay themselves with and how often. In fact, they are so good
that they deserve much better pensions than any you'll ever see, such
as full pay for life, a free car with driver, free body guards for
life and subsidized vacations, all at their own discretion, and you
must believe they have plenty of that. It's even OK for them to
bounce checks because they are not ordinary people. (How many times
must I tell you?)
Their personal investments and fortunes have absolutely nothing to
do with the capital spending decisions they make. It is not at all
self-serving for them to accept gifts from lobbyists, to allow
lobbyists to write legislation, nor is it nepotism to place their
family, friends or lovers into cushy government jobs for which they
may or may not be qualified.
This is all appropriate – usual and customary. Believe it; just
don't mention it because it's not polite.
Delusion #11
The millions of people who have been killed by governments over
centuries were not actually wrongful deaths. Burning women and
children alive with chemical weapons was appropriate and necessary to
sustain the life of someone else somewhere, somehow. It could just as
readily have been American women and children, or even the American
President himself and his children – believe it. This is actually
why we have to fight them over there.
Often, killing lots of people somewhere else is a good idea and it
will somehow make you free and prosperous. This killing is
appropriate because it's not actually you who has to pull the
trigger, inject the lethal dose of poison or actually clean up the
dead bodies, prepare them for burial or knock on the door of an
unsuspecting mother and tell her what you did to her child. There are
other toadies for that. Don't worry - you won't have to remind her
that her tax dollars paid for the demise of her child at the hands of
government. Division of labor and knowledge is purely accidental.
"Thou shalt not kill" needs to be put in context and interpreted by
the person for whom you vote, which is completely different than your
neighbor voting for some other serial killer.
What must be believed is that your man would never actually
interpret you as being one of those whom it is acceptable to kill,
and that's why it's important to vote. You don't want to end up on
the wrong side of a vote, do you? At this point, the characters in
Orwell's Animal Farm would go out back to find the basic rule written
on the wall of the barn has been modified to read: "Thou shalt not
kill me" and "Thou shalt love and honor thy bureaucrat with all thy
heart, mind, soul and body."
Delusion #10
Government does not play fast and loose with your money, your
property, your life or your child. (No, seriously. I mean it. Stop
that snickering in the back row!) They also hold themselves to the
same standards as average Americans. They do not consider themselves
above any law they make for the masses. Laws protect us all, they are
all good and this is why we follow them, so that we are all held to
the same standard, safe and secure. Politicians do not actually
pardon one another, that idea is a nasty manipulation of the truth by
the ferocious watchdog, mainstream media.
The legislative process actually costs nothing. We're about to
obtain freedom any day now and here's the plan: freedom fries,
freedom of voting and freedom of obedience.
Freedom is not less than a zero sum game – we can keep it and
export it to Iraq at the same time. Not that many Iraqis are dying,
especially not children. Actually only a few old, bad ones are dying
in our current war, possibly of natural causes, and they're
practically killing themselves, so they don't count. The Bush
Administration does not have a baseline number anyway, so it has no
way of determining how many Iraqis have been killed except to
estimate: "one-half," "two-thirds," or "three-quarters," depending on
the day of the week. To sum it up in a bumper sticker, you could
say, "Want Peace? Start Killing People. – That ought to do it."
Iraqis are actually bad and different from you and me, in that if
our situations were reversed, we would be resisting tyranny, they,
however are resisting what superior and benevolent people know to be
good for them. (You do believe this, don't you?)
The defense contractors who are becoming obscenely wealthy and
their relationship to the current administration is not something you
should think about. The American military personnel who are dying,
wounded or committing suicide aren't really something you should
think about or talk about, either. That would be unpatriotic. The
reason that politicians' children go to private schools and stay of
out combat is purely accidental, and again, not something you should
think about.
This particular war and the ones that follow it (and there will be
plenty of those) are much different from previous ones. This war and
future wars will be pleasant, quick and cost next to nothing. You
don't see any pictures of coffins containing dead G.I.'s in the
newspaper, do you? It's because there really aren't very many, and
they might not even be that dead.
Delusion #9
You do not own your life. Questioning authority is dangerous. It
could create chaos, the kind you find birthing order in nature every
day of the week. You must believe that it is someone else's
responsibility to see that people do not die prematurely (or even
break a fingernail) from being free to live their own lives as they
see fit, rather than the millions of souls who have been expedited to
heaven by governments since the beginning of tyranny. It is good,
noble and appropriate to die from government mandate. It is simply
wrong to decide to end your own life no matter what the
circumstances. The government needs your income and moral support.
Otherwise, what would happen to our wars?
Delusion #8
Other people's deaths are just not as important as your beliefs or
your representative's actions on your behalf. Good intentions of
bureaucrats are more important than life itself, so long as it's not
your death we're talking about. That would be different and important
to them and everyone else--believe it.
Delusion #7
You do not own your body. Other people are responsible for healing
and providing for it should you make poor life choices, and this is
why they must tell you how to live. They feel your pain. Government
programs, which you understand first hand to be completely useless
and even destructive to the human spirit, are somehow appropriate and
useful for other people.
Handouts do not create dependency, but somehow raise self-esteem
and encourage people to make better choices the next time around.
They'll have fewer children, become responsible parents, and make
better food choices and exercise. They'll stop smoking, excessive
drinking and gambling. To put it in a nutshell: teach a man to fish
and he'll starve. Create a huge bureaucracy to give Third World
dictators unfathomable piles of cash with which to fuel their
military and police powers and you'll see violence diminish and an
end to hunger. It's going to work any day now. Total government can
also nullify the fact that life isn't fair.
Delusion #6
You actually do own your property. Your name is on the mortgage,
isn't it? This is not a scam in which you are simply "renting" it
from the powers that be depending upon your ability and willingness
to pay property taxes. Coercive taxation backed by firepower is
necessary to get your trash picked up and your streets plowed, even
if it should begin to feel like highway robbery. ($4.5K a year for a
2,000 square foot house sounds like theft to me, but never mind the
musings of a troublemaker.)
If your property value should decrease, just because your taxes are
calculated as a percentage of it does not mean that they should
decrease, too. Don't be selfish – just think of the many government
employees who depend upon you. Their cost of living is going up all
the time. They're not like you--you can just go out and get a second
job.
If you improve your home in any way, trash pick up and snow plowing
costs increase. I know you are squirming now, and don't like the
sound of this, but in order to keep voting, you must believe it. You
must also believe that not only is this good, right and fair, but
your man will change all this so that you can once again be
comfortable with the idea of a Santa Claus who's making a list,
checking her twice and "getting' her done." Then the new rules will
be good, right and fair. Try not to think about how you were told
that the old ones were good, right and fair. I know this is
confusing, but just trust the government, they'll always tell you
clearly what is OK and what isn't, like the 10,000 pages of IRS tax
code and wrong answers to your queries. You don't need to think. They
are here to help you.
Delusion #5
You will never be the victim of a mistaken "no-knock" drug raid.
The police are your servants. Video cameras, tanks and SWAT teams
coming to your town will not be used against you. They will actually
eliminate crime and keep you safe. Remember, they are from the
government and they are here to help you.
Delusion #4
Elections are above board. Ballot counters are never tempted to
cheat in favor of their candidate, even though they are potential
beneficiaries of candidate's policies. Electronic voting machines are
never rigged.
Delusion #3
The emperor is not actually naked. If you voted for him, his use of
force (war/rulings/deceptions/power grab/secrecy) is different and
right, not like the last one. He is actually anointed by your god,
capable of getting direction from said god for the rest of us to
carry out just as Moses did on Mt. Sinai (no matter how many must
die), and he obeys the orders of the voices in his head without
question. Shouldn't you?
Delusion #2
The initiation of force to achieve social goals actually works,
costs nothing, and does not create unintended consequences or counter
force. Your political party, given unlimited reign, will eventually
create less government, less violence and less suffering for all life
on the planet. It can rescind the laws of supply and demand and the
tendency of everyone to want something for nothing and power mongers
from seeking office. It will end injustice, oppression, war and
hunger around the globe and require less and less of your paycheck to
do it every day.
Delusion # 1
The greatest lie you must believe to continue voting is that
liberty actually comes from pimp daddy in Washington , D.C. You do
believe this, right? Government approved and financed teachers in
schools all over the country would not lie to you. That would be a
crazy, paranoid, tin hat, conspiracy theory.
You have the right, but not the obligation, to pursue your own
happiness, except where prohibited. Or how prohibited, how much
prohibited, or when, what or who prohibited. The pursuit of
happiness is subject and limited by a few, simple parameters--
suggestions, really, which government kindly lays out for you at
every turn. (You must believe this is best; otherwise anything could
happen.) Benevolent, selfless legislators everywhere work day and
night to see to it that "anything" does not happen. And it's not
because they are high on power and prestige, nor are they
profiteering from the legislative process--really. It's because they
wake up each morning wondering what they can do for you today -
believe it.

EXCERPT:

The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim,
nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in
private hands able to dominate the political system of each country
and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be
controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world
acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent
private meetings and conferences.
The apex of the system was to be the Bank for International
Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and
controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private
corporations. Each central bank sought to dominate its government by
its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign
exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the
country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent
economic rewards in the business world.

until federal Storm Troopers knock down the doors of their
homes and rag them off to the gulags, they have lost no

The real question here is "when will YOU have had
enough?" I had enough years ago. I've been doing
my part ever since: phoning government, emailing
government, protesting, informing others, and much
more. Whatever I can. But what have YOU done?
What are YOU doing? If the answer is "plenty" then
congratulate yourself and keep on keeping on. If
however, you are doing nothing, then you need to get
off of YOUR ass and get involved! Our nation is a
Constitutional Republic. Our founders intended for
YOU to be involved, and things are best when YOU
are involved! So if you are not involved, start doing
something NOW. Just like in Nazi Germany, no one
thought that THEY were in trouble until the Storm Troopers
came to their door. If you wait until the criminal elements
within our government come to YOUR door - it will be
TOO LATE! Act now. -- Don Barletta
